Martha Bernal
May 29, 2020 -
Mrs. Martha Bernal is a San Antonio native. Mrs. Bernal has over 20 years of experience in Operations and Sales as well as Education. She was an Operation Manager for the Hard Rock Cafe in both the United States and in Italy. She has a background in hospitality as a Sales Manager for two hotels in our city. Mrs. Bernal also taught English in Florence, Italy in early 2000.
Mrs. Bernal comes to GHLO after being a part of the Great Hearts family for five years. Martha Bernal joined the Monte Vista South campus in the fall of 2015 when her daughter Vittoria entered the first grade. Her journey with Great Hearts began as a Kindergarten Teacher Apprentice, where she taught Social Studies and Science. After a few years, her zeal for teaching presented her with the opportunity to work with our most unique scholars. As an advocate of Mortimer Adler’s philosophy that the “best education for one is the best education for all”, she transitioned into the Student Services team and by 2018 she was part of the Special Education Department. Mrs. Bernal also led the Spanish Club for GHMVS for the last four years. One of her proudest moments with her students happened during the celebration of our city’s tricentennial in May 2018. The Spanish Club had the opportunity to host distinguished guests from Moguer, Spain, home to Fray Antonio de Olivares, who led the Franciscan missionaries who founded the San Antonio de Valero Mission in 1718.
Mrs. Bernal and her husband Bernardo Bernal, a retired police officer for the City of Madison, Wisconsin, enjoy traveling through Europe with their daughter, Vittoria. Vittoria will also be joining GHLO as a sixth grader in 2020-2021. They delight in visiting historical locations and bringing history to life for Vittoria. They love staying physically fit as a family, classical music, visiting museums, reading in Spanish, and practicing Italian at home.
Mrs. Bernal is extremely thankful for the growth Great Hearts has seen in recent years in Texas. She is happy with the fact that San Antonio has embraced Great Hearts Academies and that her city is fortunate to thrive in classical education accessible to everyone. As the new Director of Campus Operations, Mrs. Bernal welcomes the opportunity to meet new families and is looking forward to celebrating the launch of our newest campus, Great Hearts Live Oak.
